Vickie Wheatley, 2024 Arts Annual Winner

Vickie Wheatley is a contemporary quiltmaker based in Louisville, Kentucky, whose work radiates vibrancy, energy, and the undercurrents of anxiety that shape our experiences. The rich textures and layered complexity in her quilts mirror the depth of our emotional responses to change.

Following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmothers, Wheatley began sewing at an early age, creating everything from tailored clothing to camping gear, drapes, and upholstery. Over time, her desire to create original work grew, ultimately leading her to art quilting. After retiring from a career in teaching, she began experimenting with fabric dyeing and designing both fused and abstract quilts—falling in love with every stage of the process.

Her inspiration comes from the intricate structures and striking images she encounters in the world around her, which she translates into cloth. More recently, her focus has turned inward, creating quilts that explore what she calls our “inner architecture”—the landscapes of thought and emotion.

Harrison County Arts reserves a spring exhibition slot for the winner of the Harrison County Arts Annual. In 2024, Vickie Wheatley earned that honor, and her work was featured in Spring of 2025.
